ART WITH A BIGGER PURPOSE
A hospital is not a fun place for anyone, especially not for kids. Regardless, some children spend a considerable amount of time trapped behind hospital walls.
Nordic Art Initiative is working to transform the children’s hospital in Ljubljana into a more colorful and positive place to visit. 300 m2 of wall space is to be filled with murals and prints by professional artists. Bright colors and inspirational artwork will be installed in the entrance of the hospital, waiting rooms, play areas, corridors, MRI and examination rooms.
AIM OF THE PROJECT
The aim is to develop a creative, interactive project in a hospital setting, working in partnership with medical staff and artists to deliver therapeutic, creative art installations that support medical goals and create stimulating and uplifting spaces for patients, staff and the wider hospital community.
A hospital stay often causes anxiety and stress, particularly in children. The aim of this project is to create a more welcoming and less stressful environment for both the young patient and for families and friends who may accompany them. Art provides a non-verbal way of communication that can be understood by patients, visitors and staff alike. It can reduce stress, fear and anxiety and can help people come to terms with emotional conflicts. This by increasing self-awareness so that they can express unspoken and often unconscious concerns about their illness. Additional benefits include increased positive staff perception, which improves job satisfaction.

Gabriella Barouch is an award winning israeli illustrator based in Tel Aviv. Working as freelance since 2011 with clients such the french post office, Le Monde newspaper, soft Gallery fashion, Dalton winery, Pinguin books and more. She was teaching two illustration courses at Lehigh university PA in 2013, was chosen as artist of the season at Jerusalem season of culture 2012 and lecture at Pecha Kucha the same year. Her work was exhibited around the world.

Her first picture book, published in 2012, ‘Care For Our World’ received 4 awards including one from the Green Book Festival.
