Art with a Bigger Purpose
September, 2017
Art with a Bigger Purpose is the specific project name for the installation of art works in paediatric clinics.
It encompasses a working model that focuses on implementing art-based changes to this clinical setting with the aim of seeing a reduction in fear and anxiety amongst children visiting hospitals. The main goal is to improve a child’s hospital experience by installing art works in this normally sterile environment. In this way, we aim to foster a positive, welcoming environment for children, relatives and staff alike.

Seasons – an animated mural by Fatheat & Bea Pántya at the Paediatric Clinic in the University Medical Centre, Ljubljana. It’s not just another mural, the work combines still and moving image. Using a free app, the audience can view an animation based on augmented reality technology. Download the LARA application and aim your phone towards the wall.

Through Art with a Bigger Purpose we encourage new ideas to form and discover alternative ways of working by bringing together audiences and creative team members from diverse backgrounds. With regards to collaborating artists, participation in this project gives them new opportunities for work and personal development. We support both young and established artists by providing opportunities for the production, development and presentation of artwork through their supportive collaboration.

Our recently launched project at the Paediatric Clinic in the University Medical Centre, Ljubljana had a creative hub of artists from four different cultural environments: Črtomir Just from Slovenia, Rafael Mayani from Mexico, Ruth Hengeveld from the Netherlands, and Fatheat & Bea Pantya from Hungary. The artworks created from this collaboration work together to spatially connect the hospital’s exterior with its interior, providing the child with visuals that can contain them in their journey on a physical and metaphorical level.
“By facilitating spaces where communication can take place between artists and specific communities, we aim to encourage their collaboration on projects through the medium of art.”
